Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding 1. Providing basic conceptual tools to explore the interplay of human functioning and cultural factors affecting human well-being and social behaviour. 2. Developing a critical perspective about cultural universals. 3. Outlining the psychological theories and methodologies dealing with the relationship between culture, self and social processes, (cultural and cross-cultural approaches in psychology) from a non-reductionist point of view. Applying knowledge and understanding 1. Raising awareness on how diversity affects psychological functioning in the context of the professional environment. 2. Highlighting possible bias in the context of the educational professional environment, particularly about the process of communication and establishing the educational relationship. 3. Considering issues of culture in the interpretation of the student’s personal experiences and of the diversity issues in various professional settings.

Program

The course will provide some basic elements of cultural and cross-cultural psychology and more generally the tools to understand the relationship between psychism and culture.
In this perspective, the concept of intrasomatic and extrasomatic culture, artefacts, the processes of construction of the image of self and other, the need for affiliation and the drive for autonomy, the relationship between communicative processes in heterocultural contexts, illness and cure in a transcultural perspective will be addressed.
The topics dealt with theoretically will be addressed in the light of the dynamics of contemporary society, highlighting their application to issues concerning the construction of "different" subjects and the relationship with the "other" (e.g. migration, gender differences, sexual orientation or identity, etc.) and more generally the social changes that most affect educational work.

Examination Methods

The final test for foreigner students is always oral. It concerns texts at points 1 and 2 in the syllabus.
Evaluation will be based on: knowledge of concepts and scientific literature as mentioned in the texts; capacity of critical reasoning and developing connections among the concepts.
