Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding 1. Acquire the basic knowledge of the method and tools of the work of the historian. 2. Get to know the “others” through comparison with the past, in order to make the educator more aware of the historical, cultural and social changes, that condition the history of childhood and, more broadly, the family. 3. Acquire the awareness that the forms of care towards children and the relationships between the components of the household are the outcome of historical process. Applying knowledge and understanding 1. Know how to contextualise from a historical point of view the educational methods, the different family models and the relationships between the components in relation to the society of belonging. 2. Develop critical sense and independence of judgment in order to seize the historical and cultural influences of the different phenomena and be able to take it considering both in educational projects and in the relationship with the “others”. 3. Develop the capability to identify today’s educational problems, related to childhood and family, depending on the historical, social and cultural context of references.

Program

After having illustrated the methodologies of investigation and the sources of the discipline, the course will address the theme of childhood in the 16th-19th centuries, examining the evolution in this time frame of the concept of childhood and of the role envisaged within the family unit. and in the society of boys and girls. In particular, the following themes will be developed: - the social roles and family members of boys and girls; - branch links; - abandoned childhood; - the educational differences between girls and boys. The intent is to prepare students to critically read the idea of childhood in the awareness that it is a historical concept that changes in time and space, subject to cultural conditioning.

Didactic methods

The prevailing didactic modality will be the participated frontal lesson, interspersed with laboratories of analysis of the sources, moments of comparison / discussion, and seminar meetings.

Learning assessment procedures

The assessment of learning will take place through an oral interview that will focus on the attending students on: - the topics developed in class; - the material uploaded to the teaching e-learning platform; - two volumes to be chosen from among those listed under the heading reference texts. The oral interview for non-attending students will focus on: - the volume S. Luzzato (edited by), First lesson of historical method, Rome - Bari, Laterza, 2010 - two volumes to be chosen from among those listed in the text of reference. For those who choose the studio of Pancino C., The nature of children. Body care, diseases and early childhood medicine between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, Bologna, Bononia University Press, 2015, chapters 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 are required.

Evaluation criteria

Students will have to demonstrate: - to be able to contextualize historical concepts and processes and to interpret them critically; - present their arguments rigorously, using appropriate and scientific language.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final evaluation, expressed out of thirty, will be determined by the quality of the oral interview on the basis of the indications set out in the item evaluation criteria.
