Learning objectives

Expected results: - Learn methods and theories of Linguistics according to the different levels of analysis (phonology, morphology, syntax, information structure). - Recognize and describe in an appropriate and uniform way the main structural phenomena occurring in languages at different levels of analysis. - Acquire experience to develop a critical attitude towards methods and theoretical frameworks for the study of language. - Present the results of the work with the appropriate terminology and according to recognized standards. - Increase the ability to learn theories and technical terminology in further studies.

Prerequisites and basic notions

None

The first part of the course (1-4) will be held by Prof. Melloni in the first semester, 1A. The second part of the course (5) will be held by prof. Delfitto in the first semester, 1B.
Bibliographic references and other study materials for the exam are available on the Moodle platform of the course.

Bibliography

Visualizza la bibliografia con Leganto, strumento che il Sistema Bibliotecario mette a disposizione per recuperare i testi in programma d'esame in modo semplice e innovativo.

Didactic methods

The teaching activities will be carried out in the classroom and will include traditional lessons and exercises.
Teaching support (how to catch up!):
Supplementary teaching materials will be uploaded to the teaching's Moodle platform, indicating the lesson to which they refer.
Reference may be made to the tutoring service of the Program (see the 'Tutoring' webpage). The teacher remains available during his or her own office hours and with meetings that can also be arranged via ZOOM.

Learning assessment procedures

Students' preparation will be verified through a 1) WRITTEN TEST for the first part, and 2) a final ORAL EXAM for the second part (on the dates of the exam sessions).
The teachers will evaluate the level of knowledge of the methods and fundamental theories of linguistics and the ability to recognize and describe linguistic phenomena in an appropriate and uniform way, in line with the topics covered during the course.
Accuracy, analytical ability and expressive skills are considered for the assessment.
Knowledge will be tested with oral questions on specific topics and concepts. Application skills (i.e. the ability to recognize and describe linguistic phenomena in an appropriate and uniform way) will be tested with a written test. The written test will consist of open-ended and multiple-choice questions on the topics and exercises covered in class. If possible, the test will be conducted in a computer room.
-Recommendations-
Under normal circumstances, we recommend the formation of study groups in which students of diverse academic experience can compare their knowledge and frameworks.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

- accuracy and completeness of the (oral and written) answers
- analytical skills
- use of technical language
The overall assessment is calculated on the average of the results of the written and oral exams.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will result from the average of the grades obtained in the two parts of the course (Melloni and Delfitto)
