Learning objectives
The course has the following fundamental objectives:
1) to provide a general description of the structures of Italian (phonetics, morphology, morphosyntax, syntax);
2) to provide basic information about the diachronic grammar and history of the Italian language from its origins to the present;
3) to guide students in the morphosyntactic analysis of some significant texts in a diachronic and synchronic perspective (in relation to the type and scope of use).
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge of the Italian language and grammar.
Program
The course is divided into two parts. The first part is dedicated to the description of the structures of contemporary Italian (according to the traditional levels of analysis: spelling, phonology, morphology and syntax) and its varieties. In the second part the main developments from Latin to Florentine and then to Italian language will be illustrated, with particular regard to the phonetic and morphology evolution.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
For attending students, teaching will consist of lectures during which the topics of the course will be illustrated and illustrative texts will be read. Students will be encouraged to intervene personally and to face the reading of the texts themselves in the classroom in order to verify the skills acquired during the lessons. In addition to the texts listed in the bibliography, the materials used in the lessons (slides and readings in pdf format) will be provided on the moodle platform.
Learning assessment procedures
Oral exam.
Evaluation criteria
Starting from the texts examined during the lessons, the student will have to answer at least two questions, one concerning synchronic linguistics, the other relating to diachronic linguistics.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final vote will take into account the knowledge of the topics of the course and the ability to analyze individual linguistic phenomena in a synchronic and diachronic perspective.
