Program
The course aims to introduce students to the reading and analysis of one of the finest examples of short tale in Old French, the 'Lais' of Marie de France. Active in the England of the Plantagenets in the second half of the 12th century, Marie de France is the author of twelve short tales in rhymed octosyllabes, in which the amorous and courtly component is intertwined with the marvellous of Celtic origin and with a taste for adventure. The reading of the selected lais will be accompanied by a linguistic introduction to Old French.

Learning assessment procedures
For all students, whether attending or not, the examination consists of: (1) an oral examination; (2) a written exercise, designed to give students the opportunity to experience reading a medieval text directly from a codex.
Evaluation criteria
The questions of the oral test will assess: (a) the knowledge of the reference texts and the topics dealt with during the course; (b) the ability to put the texts read in class into historical, literary and cultural context; (c) the ability to read, translate and comment on the texts read during the course.
The written exercise will consist of a transcription test from a manuscript; at the beginning of the course, a folder with reproductions of folios of manuscripts will be provided in the moodle space; students could choose one folio. The exercise must be handed in ten days before the date of the exam in which students intend to enrol. The transcript will be discussed during the exam. The objective of the written proof is to test the ability to read a medieval codex.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final score is determined from the media between the oral and written examination.
