CHIM/01 - ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
Period
1° semestre dal Oct 1, 2024 al Jan 31, 2025.
Courses Single
Authorized with reserve
Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of analytical chemistry, of the chemical-analytical process and of the most widely used analytical-instrumental methodologies and techniques. The skills to be transmitted also include the statistical processing of experimental data, and the resolution of an analytical problem on the basis of official methods of analysis and scientific literature.
Examination methods: Open written test.
To pass the exam, students must demonstrate that:
-they have acquired the fundamental notions of analytical chemistry;
-possess the tools to be able to critically evaluate both the experimental results obtained and those reported in the case studies also statistically and chemometrically;
-achieve a global vision of the analytical process, starting from the choice of the method to the elaboration of the results and of the types of analysis methods, clearly communicating their conclusions, as well as the knowledge and the rationale underlying them.
Prerequisites and basic notions
The preparatory courses required by the study plan must be completed
Program
Introduction to analytical chemistry: scope and application of analytical chemistry; classification of methods; glassware. Sampling: characteristics of the sample; sampling schemes; treatment. Classical analytical chemistry: equilibria in solution and pH: chemistry of aqueous solutions; effect of the presence of electrolytes on ionic equilibria; application of equilibrium calculations to complex systems. Classical analytical chemistry: titrations. Theory of titrations. Titration curves for complex acid/base systems. Application of neutralization titrations. Gravimetric methods of analysis. Precipitation titrations. Applications of REDOX titrations. Instrumental analytical chemistry: spectroscopic techniques and their applications (UV-vis; IR, NMR, MS). Separative analytical techniques: principles of separations; theory of chromatographic methods; GC and HPLC. Statistical treatment of data: concepts and definitions; evaluation of data quality (Error Theory); application of statistics to data treatment and evaluation. Principles of quality control: basics of pharmaceutical regulations; structure of a quality control laboratory; importance in quality control and safety of nutraceutical products; lifecycle of a pharmaceutical product.

Learning assessment procedures
Written test with open questions, multiple choice questions, calculation exercises. The written test may be integrated with an oral test, according to the teacher's specific evaluation.
Evaluation criteria
To pass the exam, students must demonstrate that they have acquired the fundamental notions of analytical chemistry; possess the tools to be able to critically evaluate, also through statistics and chemometrics, both the experimental results obtained and those reported in the case studies; achieve a global vision of the analytical process, starting from the choice of the method up to the processing of the results, and of the types of analysis methods, clearly communicating their conclusions, as well as the knowledge and rationale underlying them.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
the final grade is assigned on the basis of the outcome of the written test and any supplementary oral test.
