Learning objectives

The course includes topics on textual criticism, codicology, palaeography, historical linguistics and cultural history (also by means of a Digital Humanities approach to texts and contents) and it aims at studying the main multidisciplinary aspects characterizing Germanic Philology. Expected Outcomes At the end of the course the student will prove: - to be able to employ at an advanced stage knowledge and methodologies (also digital methodologies), and cultural contents which are necessary for the analysis and interpretation of Germanic linguistic and literary traditions; - to have examined in depth the main multidisciplinary aspects of the discipline and to have strengthened the mastery of a correct and accurate specialized terminology; - To be able to apply autonomously the acquired knowledge and contents (in the field of codicology, palaeography, historical linguistics, textual-criticism and digital philology), to the analysis and interpretation of texts with the purpose of creating scholarly editions, archives and databases. This will promote knowledge of methodologies and applications in the field of philology, textual criticism and linguistics (in compliance with the learning outcomes of the Master Degree in Languages, Literatures and Digital Culture).

Prerequisites and basic notions

Knowledge of at least one modern Germanic language (e.g. English, German) is not mandatory, but advisable.

Program

The course is divided into 4 parts. The first part (6 hours - 3 lectures) revises some of the key concepts of the discipline and qualifies as an introduction or warm-up. In the second one (12 hours - 6 lectures) single Germanic traditions (Gothic, German, English, old Norse) will be considered on the basis of the documentary evidence which is relevant to their linguistic and cultural history. The third part (12 hours - 6 lectures) covers a cross-cultural and cross-literary topic for the understanding of the dynamics of development of vernacular literatures. This concerns the figure of Theoderic of Bern, the heroic-legendary version of the historical figure of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great (454-526). Among the relevant witnesses, a Þjóðríkr is mentioned in the complex runic inscription on the Rök stone (9th cent.), and in the Anglo-Saxon area both in the Widsith and in the Deor (10th cent.). His fictitious exile at Attila’s court is the background of the events narrated in the Hildebrandslied (9th cent.) and reappears in the Nibelungenlied in Middle High German (13th cent.). The Nordic tradition handed down the entire life of the hero in the Þiðrekssaga af Bern (13th century), but he is also mentioned in some poems of the Poetic Edda (13th cent.). The last module (12 hours - 6 lectures) is both theoretical and practical: first the milestones of development of textual criticism and digital philology will be discussed. This preliminary theoretical-methodological reflection will lead to a hands-on section. Students will be able to experiment the possibilities offered by the digital medium on the texts considered in the previous part: we will prepare encoding samples in XML / TEI, which will include a manuscript description, the annotation of a digital facsimile and the transcription of selected textual portions.

Didactic methods

As indicated by the University for the academic year 2022/2023, the course will be in presence. Any changes will be announced before the start of the course on the instructor's web page and on the Moodle platform, to which everyone is required to sign up. The course materials for attending students consist of the selected bibliography in Leganto, the lectures and other materials that will be available on Moodle. The program for non-attending students must be agreed in advance. Non-attending students are supposed to contact the instructor via email (please use your institutional address @studenti.univr.it) to arrange a meeting. The selected bibliography in Leganto will be further dretailed at the beginning of the course.
Teaching support (also for Covid-19 positive self-certified students):
Supplementary teaching materials will be uploaded on the Moodle platform.
The instructor is also available for support during office hours, which can also be agreed via ZOOM where necessary.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will be oral and will follow the the official exams schedule published by the University. For attending students there will be a pre-roll call which will be agreed together. For non-attending students, the exam will be also oral and follow the same procedures indicated above.

Evaluation criteria

The oral exam will assess both the level of acquired contents and the ability to critically address the topics covered during the course, and to create connections among them. Part of the evaluation will also concern the correct and consistent presentation of the acquired knowledge; another part will verify the competent and appropriate use of the philological micro-language. During the exam the assimilation of the primary sources can be tested by reading, translation, and comment of short excerpts selected from the texts studied during the course and provided by the instructor during the exam.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final assessment is expressed out of 30/30 (min. 18/30) and it is to be understood as an overall evaluation of the achieved results.
