Learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce students to the advanced study of music in its relationship with culture and society through the analysis of particularly relevant musical phenomena and works. On successful completion of the module, which is centered around one or more case studies, students will be able to analyze and interpret the role and significance of music as a means of communication and interaction between human beings, both in the past and today.
Program
The course focuses on music, society and culture in Renaissance European courts. It is divided into two parts. The first investigates the role and significance of music as a medium of communication between human beings and of construction of social groups, both today and in the past. The second part consists in a historical overview of the different uses of music in Renaissance European courts.

Examination Methods
Written test: three questions, to be answered in 1h and 30m. The first question will centre on music as a medium of communication between human beings and of construction of social groups (first part of the course); the other two will focus on the courts and musical works discussed in lectures and in the readings (second part of the course). Evaluation criteria: proper use of specific vocabulary, knowledge of the fundamental aspects of the relationship between music and society, ability to analyze the pieces presented as case studies and locate them in their historical context.
How to register for the exam
Students intending to sit the exam for this course must:
- enter their name online for “appello scritto NON VERBALIZZANTE”
- after the written exam, wait for the publication of grades in the section “avvisi” of the professor’s webpage (http://www.dcuci.univr.it/?ent=persona&id=4950&lang=it#tab-avvisi).
- Students who want their grade to be officially registered must enter their name online for the “appello VERBALIZZANTE” (or “di VERBALIZZAZIONE”). This “appello” does NOT require a student’s physical presence: the professor will register the grade online in his own time.
