Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE. The course is divided into two parts. The first part briefly traces the history of the philological method from antiquity to the modern era; it displays the techniques of the Lachmann method and the acquisitions of the New philology. The second part focuses on the analysis of some concrete examples both of stemmatic reconstruction and author philology, taking into consideration linguistic and graphic features of each text. SKILLS Through the analysis of concrete examples, directly conducted on the tables of codes and printed editions, the student will learn how to distinguish between errors and variants, to classify manuscripts, to order them into families and to prepare a critical edition. He will also learn how to conduct an edition relying on a single witness and on autograph manuscripts.
