Learning outcomes

The course analyzes the itinerary through which the Italian artistic heritage from XV to XIX century has come to definition. The aim is not to consider the works studied in the course merely through an esthetic and a formal approach. The work of art is instead a part of a cultural and a historical context and depends on the choices of patronage that often determines a particular language or another; depends on personal relationship and on religious, political etc. beliefs of the author; depends on the inner meaning that the work had to transmit. It is important to underline that as a work of art we do not intend only the figurative one (painting and sculpture), but a relevant chapter is represented by architecture as well, which is the artistic genre that everyone, moving in the city, frequents most.
Lessons will be dedicated to an introduction to the study of the history of modern art. Since it is impossible to discuss in detail such a vast subject in few lessons, the professor will trace a synthetic analysis of the most relevant artistic episodes from the Renaissance to the beginning of the XIX century, proceeding for fundamental subjects and for methodological principles, through the analysis of single works (a painting, a statue, a building etc.) that are considered representative of a School or of a movement. The student will have to demonstrate he/she is able to link among themselves, through the use of the textbook, the different episodes studied at lesson.

Program

Content of the course:
The course deals with the history of modern art in the chronological period from early XV century (Brunelleschi) to early XIX century (Canova). Lessons will be dedicated to artistic episodes of that period, proceeding through particularly relevant moments under formal and methodological principles.

Didactic methods:
Lessons will take place three times a week and each lesson will last two hours. Powerpoint slides will illustrate the subject of each lesson. The same slides will be available for students on the e-learning platform on the University web page, but they cannot be reproduced since they are copyrighted.
The general part is the same for students that attend the lessons and for those who cannot. Those who cannot attend the course are suggested to be present at least at the first lessons of the course in which the professor provides useful information for the preparation of the examination.

Examination Methods

The examination consists of a written test: three open questions in two hours’ time (one about painting, one about sculpture, one about architecture, each one of a different epoch). On the professor’s web site are some examples of questions taken from precedent tests.

The student shall demonstrate: he/she knows about the significant deeds in the artist’s life; he is able to make a critical analysis of the works illustrated at lessons. The works will be around 20. It will be necessary to know: the subject represented; the actual location; precedent collectors (if known); the patronage.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
