1. Introduction to Romance Linguistics

The course will explore the dynamics that led to the emergence of the Romance languages, highlighting their main typological and historical features.
2. Fundamentals of Textual Criticism and an Introduction to Medieval Romance Manuscript Cultures

3. Overview of Medieval Romance Literatures. Chrétien de Troyes and the Old French Arthurian Verse Romance
After an introduction to medieval genres, from troubadour lyric poetry to the chanson de geste, the course will focus on Chrétien de Troyes to explore key concepts such as medieval authorship and manuscript tradition.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The course consists of lectures complemented by the analysis of original texts in their respective languages, with translation and linguistic and literary commentary. In addition to engaging with medieval texts in the original language, students will examine digital reproductions of medieval manuscripts during class sessions. This approach will enable them to interact directly with the material aspects of manuscript tradition, exploring issues related to textual transmission and the challenges of critical editing. Teaching activities will also include guided reading sessions and textual analysis, fostering an interactive and participatory learning environment.
Learning assessment procedures
The final assessment will consist of a written examination with open-ended questions on the main topics covered in the course. The exam will focus on the linguistic evolution from Vulgar Latin to the Romance languages, issues in textual criticism and manuscript tradition, as well as the literary aspects of medieval Romance narrative, with particular emphasis on the works of Chrétien de Troyes. Special attention will be given to the ability to historically and culturally contextualise the linguistic, textual, and literary phenomena discussed throughout the course.
