Learning outcomes
Aim of the course is offering a knowledge of the history of literary Italian language, with specific attention to the language of prose, and improving the ability to independently analyze the texts of Italian tradition.
Through the analysis of a literary genre, an author or a group of works relevant to the tradition of Italian literary prose, the course aims to highlight the implications of the language present in the texts with the other elements of the stylistic system (narrative structures, argumentative processes, discursive approach).
At the end of the course students are expected to be able to operatively apply the acquired knowledge and, therefore, to independently proceed to the linguistic analysis of a text in Italian literary prose, as preliminary element for its overall interpretation.
Program
Le Confessioni d’un Italiano by Ippolito Nievo consent to verify the question of the language of the novel in the years immediately following the proclamation of the Regno d’Italia. Nievo does not adopt the solution of the contemporary spoken Florentine language and for the Confessioni, as for the other narrative works, he chooses a dynamic language that draws from the literary tradition, the dialect and the colloquial language: through the reading and analysis of selected chapters the course aims to evaluate the expressive efficacy of the solutions implemented by Nievo in a phase of the history of the Italian language in which linguistic unification had not yet been achieved.
