Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide software tools (graphic, videographic and authoring programs) and cognitive design tools (interface and interaction design) intended to design, implement and manage multimedia projects, with particular relation to web platforms and mobile devices. Specific attention will be paid to visual language and its specific "grammar” and "syntactic" features. At the end of the course, students will be able to create and manage a multimedia project in line with current communication standards.
Program
The course introduces the knowledge of the building blocks of the project of cross-media communication solutions for publishing and journalism. Since cross-media narration extends the concept of multimedia to all those narratives that develop through an ecosystem of media and platforms, it will range from the dimension of information architecture to that of its representation and use. Particular attention will be paid to the specific linguistic, visual and verbal characteristics that these communicative artifacts require, to the design of the interfaces and interaction.
With the aim of conveying the student's acquisition of a good level of knowledge and understanding of the theoretical nodes of the discipline and the development of critical skills towards contemporary problems related to the design and production of cross-media communication ecosystems, it will lend itself attention to the comparison with:
- the fields of application of data visualization, visual journalism, digital storytelling, interactive documentary.
- the software tools suitable for the realization of these systems.
The program is structured in two parts, subsequently defined as first and second, which will however be addressed simultaneously and developed in parallel.
First part: "Of the method, of the methods"
Lectures are aimed at introducing and deepening the topics covered in the course, supported by the presentation of a wide selection of case studies deemed of particular interest. During the course, meeting with industry professionals can be organized.
Second part: "Project work"
Lectures will be counterpointed by the proposal for a series of practical exercises, which will first be undertaken in the classroom under the guidance of the teacher and subsequently continued and developed independently by the students. The exercises follow one another by tracing a path that, from an initial analytical framework phase to the subsequent ones of a more purely design nature, will gradually introduce students to mastering the various aspects related to the design of transmedia communication solutions for publishing and journalism. The stages of this path will allow you to develop the technical, cognitive and intellectual tools to confront, in the final part of the course, with the production of an elaborate group project "Concept design for a cross-media narrative ecosystem".
