Learning outcomes

The course aims to explore some of the most significant social dynamics that, in the transition from premodern cultures, through modernity, to contemporary cultures accompany the use of cultural objects and products. There will be two basic objectives that the course program will explore: 1. To understand the changes in the relationship of social actors with cultural products and knowledge technologies and, consequently, changes in the structures of society; 2. To explore how cultural consumption acts in the production of forms of social stratification.
In this sense, at the end of the course, students will be able to analytically interpret the social function of knowledge technologies in a diachronic perspective, matching different sociological perspectives interact.

Program

The program will focus on the following topics:

1. Synthetic positioning of the course contents in the context of sociology of culture studies;
2. Oral and written cultures;
3. The revolutions in the technologies of knowledge;
4. The relationship between knowledge technologies and cultures;
5. Forms of memory in modern and contemporary societies;
6. Digital cultures and knowledge technologies;
7. Field, habitus and symbolic capitals in cultural consumption;
8. Cultural products and forms of social stratification.

Students are advised to carry out a preliminary review of the fundamental concepts of sociological knowledge starting from the contents of a handbook of sociology by themes (ex. "Sociologia", by J.C. Alexander and K. Thompson) and / or by authors (ex . "Le tappe del pensiero sociologico", by R. Aron). An English version of both is available.

Examination Methods

Two alternative assessment methods are proposed, among which the student can choose.

1. "Traditional" mode:
- Oral exam starting from the recommended texts.

2. "Step" mode:
- first step: production of a written text starting from the reflection and personal re-elaboration of the contents proposed in the classroom (in itinere);
- second step: production of a written work and a multimedia production to be presented publicly in the classroom on occasions dedicated to a topic related to the sociology of culture and which do not directly form the curricular contents of the course;
- third step: oral examination on specific parts of the program.

In both cases, the final evaluation derives from the average of the results obtained in each test.
