Learning outcomes
The aim of the course "Practical activity in medical statistics applied to dentistry" is to provide theoretical and practical tools for assessing the frequency of diseases in human populations and the associated risk factors. The course therefore aims to provide skills in the field of bio-statistics and computer science applied to the analysis of bio-medical data. At the end of the course students will have to demonstrate their ability to apply bio-statistical methods to data analysis using statistical software.
Program
The course is structured in theoretical-practical lessons (12 hours) on the use of the statistical software STATA for the quantitative analysis of biomedical data.
1. Principles of epidemiology
- cross-sectional study, cohort study, case-control study
- relative risk, odds ratio
- confounding
2. Descriptive analysis: statistics, tables and graphs
3. Statistical inference:
- Statistical tests for the comparison of unmatched samples (quantitative and categorical variables)
- Confidence intervals (quantitative and categorical variables)
4. Stratified analysis and linear regression models:
- Recognising confounding using multiple linear regression models
Bibliography
Examination Methods
The final test is a written exam in computer lab.
The aim of the test is to verify a basic knowledge of the principles of epidemiology and the ability to solve a biomedical problem by analyzing health data using the statistical software STATA.
The commands, results and interpretation of the analysis must be reported in written form.
The final evaluation is expressed in thirtieths.
