Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge about the psychology of groups, the types of the group, with regard to identity, belonging and socialization in the group, to the dynamic and structural processes, to conflict and cooperation in groups and to decision-making processes in groups.
Program
Definition and group types; the perception of belonging to groups; socialization in the group; dynamic processes and structural aspects in the groups; models of evolution in the group life; factors that promote cohesion, emotional stability and performance of the group; discrimination, conflict and cooperation in groups; decision making, leadership, and communication networks.
Program in expanded form:
• Definition and types of group (primary, secondary)
• The perception and the importance of belonging to groups, the interdependence between individuals
• The socialization in the group, rules and social norms, social control and sanctions; formal and informal roles in the group; clarity and ambiguity, acceptance and role conflict
• dynamic and structural aspects in groups (to enter, stay and leave the group)
• Patterns of evolution in the group life (eg Tuckman)
• The main factors that foster cohesion, emotional stability, operational balance and group performance
• Discrimination, conflict and cooperation in groups: types of conflicts in groups; integration of differences and conflict management in the group
• Group Phenomena "social loafing", the effect "bystander" and phenomena that may facilitate the psycho-social violence, eg the deindividuation, polarization, uncritical obedience to authority (Asch's experiments, Milgram, Zimbardo ), altruism and prosocial behaviour
• Group dynamics and bullying; factors which contribute to the process of burnout
• Decision-making processes in groups, the leadership
• The group meaning and group dynamics "in practice"; personal insights about the own perception ( "Johari Window") and behavior in groups.
