Module title: INTRODUCTION TO CORPUS LINGUISTICS
- What is corpus linguistics?
- A taxonomy of corpora
- issues in corpus design and compilation
- issues in working with spoken / written / digital corpora
- corpus annotation and mark-up
- Accessing and analyzing corpus data in English
- Introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics in corpus linguistics
- Concordances, collocations, n-grams
- The Web as a corpus
Practical examples will be shown throughout the module, and students will be encouraged to carry out simple analyses on available corpora online.
Lesson slides, which are part study materials, will be available for download on the Moodle platform. Students who will not attend classes are therefore invited to join the Moodle platform to access class materials and activities.
There are no differences in content and reading for students who attend and do not attend classes.

Didactic methods
The course will combine face to face classroom lectures with classroom discussion and practical activities; students are encouraged to participate actively.
Methods of teaching support:
Guidelines and teaching materials will be uploaded in the Moodle platform of the module. Students are also invited to contact the instructor via e-mail or during office hours.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam will be an oral exam, and will include theoretical questions on the topics covered in class, their application to hypothetical scenarios of corpus design and analysis, and practical exercises of corpus analysis.
The contents of the exam are the same for attending and non-attending students. All students will be tested for the same skills.
Part I and Part II of the exam will be taken on the same day.
Evaluation criteria
Evaluation is based on the following aspects:
- correctness and exhaustiveness of answers to theoretical questions
- ability to apply theoretical concepts to hypothetical corpus design and analysis scenarios
- ability to carry out simple practical exercises.
