Program

The second part of the course will focus on the methodological issues surrounding comparative linguistic research, considering non-standard languages and variation, and the critical evaluation of linguistic sources. It aims to teach students how to apply a comparative analysis to relevant topics, e.g. pronominal paradigms or verb clusters, using German and related languages, e.g. Dutch, English, Scandinavian (Frisian, Afrikaans), with an additional focus on dialectal variation, e.g. Tyrolean, and minority languages, e.g. Cimbrian, Mòcheno. It aims to highlight the issues surrounding the analysis of minority languages and dialect varieties in comparison to standardized majority languages, e.g. High German, and focus on the practical considerations during data collection and analysis. Students will be introduced to a variety of existing linguistic resources, e.g. online databases like VinKo, to use as the basis for conducting linguistic research.

Didactic methods

Classes will be held in English.

Learning assessment procedures

The final examination consists in a 15-minute presentation of a research proposal chosen from a list of possible topics (presentation day). Students are required to present comparative syntax research on German and other Germanic languages or their native language. Alternatively, students might want to hand in a short paper (~10 pages), which will be evaluated by both professors. Papers are due at least 2 weeks in advance the exam sessions.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The final mark is agreed upon by both professors and evaluates the overall performance.
