Learning objectives
The course aims to offer to the students a selection and an analysis of the essays published in the Western world during the 19th and the 20th century that were crucial in the construction of important critical methodologies.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge of the Italian language
Program
The course aims to provide a general overview of literary criticism and theory from the late 19th century to the present day. Through the reading and analysis of a selection of primary texts, it will introduce the main authors and critical movements that have shaped the history of the discipline at both national and European levels. Particular emphasis will be placed on the dynamic relationship between literary works and their readers, as well as the inherently inexhaustible nature of interpretative processes. In addition to the primary and secondary texts listed in the syllabus, further in-depth materials will be made available to students. These will be presented in class through PowerPoint presentations and subsequently shared on the Moodle platform.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The teaching method will primarily consist of traditional lectures. In the final phase of the course, a seminar component will be introduced, allowing attending students to actively and independently apply the tools and methodologies acquired during the first part of the course. Students may choose to present a critical analysis of a literary text of their own selection, either individually or in small groups. The chosen text does not necessarily have to be among those included in the exam syllabus.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam format will be the same for both attending and non-attending students and will consist of an oral interview aimed at assessing the acquisition of critical tools, argumentative skills, language proficiency, and course content. The evaluation will also consider the ability to navigate sources and bibliographic materials, identifying relevant information to illustrate the cultural aspects and domains of the discipline.
Evaluation criteria
A thorough knowledge of the texts, sharp interpretative insight, critical thinking, and strong argumentative skills will be awarded the highest scores (27-30). A descriptive and general knowledge of the bibliography, with limited analytical and synthetic abilities, will result in positive but not high scores (24-26). Gaps in knowledge, superficial analysis, and inappropriate or unclear language will lead to low or failing grades (18-23).
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
Exclusively for attending students who choose to prepare and present a critical analysis of a literary text (individually or in small groups), the final grade will be the average of the score received for the presentation and the score obtained in the final oral exam.
