Learning objectives

The main notions and techniques of linear algebra and matrix theory are presented, focusing both on theoretical and computational aspects. Moreover, the course provides an introduction to planar and spatial geometry, within the projective, affine, and euclidean setting, both analytical (coordinates, matrices) and synthetic tools will be employed.
At the end of the course the student must be able to demonstrate an adequate synthesis and abstraction ability and be able to formalize and solve linear algebra and geometric problems.

Prerequisites and basic notions

First and second degree equations; operations with polynomials; elementary set theory; elementary analythic geometry in the Cartesian Plane; Logical deductions of moderate complexity and logical implications between elementary statements.

Program

1. Vector spaces
2. Linear maps and Matrices
3. Solving linear systems
4. Determinant of matrices
5. Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors

Didactic methods

The course is dived into two parts. The theoretical class, consisting in frontal lessons on the blackboard and the practical class consisting in solving exercises on the blackboard. The lecturer will give a list of books that the students can use to master better the topics of the course and to find more exercises. He will show how some practical problems can be translated into linear algebra problems.
The teaching material will be shared on the page dedicated to the course.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will consist of a written test which will include both theory questions and exercises. Those who obtain a grade greater than or equal to 27/30 will have the opportunity to take an optional oral exam.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The main criteria of evaluation are:
1. Ability in doing operations between matrices; ability in solving linear systems with m equations in n variables; ability in solving problems involving vectorial spaces and linear maps; ability in solving problems in euclidean spaces
2. Ability in translating a problem in a system of linear equations.
3.Ability in using logic-deductive reasoning to solve different kind of problems.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The assessment of learning involves the attribution of a final grade expressed out of thirty.
This evaluation is given by the vote of the oral interview (to the extent of 30%) and by the evaluation obtained in the written test (to the extent of 70%).
Honors will be evaluated on the basis of the level of in-depth analysis and critical analysis of the topics dealt with in the
course of the oral interview and for students who have already achieved the overall evaluation of
30/30.
In particular, the ability to apply will be examined as part of the assessment for assessment purposes
the acquired knowledge as well as the ability to propose correct and efficient solutions in solving linear algebra problems.
