Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the theoretical and practical tools to model, analyze and control a dynamic system in the time and frequency domain.
At the end of the course the student will have acquired the following knowledge and skills:
- Ability to analyze the properties of a dynamic system in the time and frequency domain,
- Ability to evaluate the stability, robustness and performance of a feedback system,
- Ability to design a control system starting from the robustness and performance requirements,
- Ability to evaluate the feasibility of a control system and evaluate the most appropriate design method,
- Being able to deal with complementary professionals for the design of a complex control system,
- Ability to continue studies in the context of control systems with a sufficient degree of autonomy.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Mathematics, Physics (mechanics), System Theory
Program
- Recall of systems: continuous LTI systems, discrete LTI systems, stability, transforms, responses - Properties of feedback systems - Requirements of a control system: stability, robustness and performance - Stability analysis using root locus - Stability analysis using diagrams Nyquist criterion, Nyquist criterion - Stability analysis using Bode diagrams, Bode criterion - Performance of a control system (step response, frequency specifications, disturbance rejection) - Frequency synthesis (loop shaping) - Synthesis of controllers PID - Advanced control schemes (cascade control, feed-forward control, anti wind-up) - Digital control systems - Matlab exercise on frequency synthesis
Didactic methods
Face-to-face lessons, trying to stimulate the active involvement of students
Learning assessment procedures
The exam will consist of a written test on the course topics. The test will contain questions in the form of theoretical questions and exercises where you will be asked to apply the techniques and methodologies explained during the course. Each question will contribute to the total score out of thirty according to a metric that will be specified in the exam text. If the written score is higher than 27, it is possible to request an oral test which will also focus on the theoretical part of the course and will be averaged with the written test.
Evaluation criteria
To pass the exam the student must demonstrate that: - they have understood the topics explained in the course, - they know how to apply the knowledge acquired to solve the assigned problems. - be able to present one's work and argue the design choices.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade will be the average of the written grade and any oral exam.
Exam language
Italiano, English if preferred
