Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the student with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the design of a computing or communication system with particular attention to the complexity of implementation and the management of network resources. At the end of the course, the students will have to demonstrate that they understand the theoretical and practical notions necessary for the realization of an algorithm in digital form, that they are able to identify the architectural characteristics of a computing system according to the requirements of the task to be performed, that they are able to use digital specification languages and automatic tools for design and simulation, that they understand the process of transformation and routing of information from source to destination, recognizing the role of network protocols, and that they are able to write distributed applications by choosing the most appropriate network service. The students will also have to demonstrate that they have the necessary skills to continue their studies independently in the field of digital design and communication networks.
Prerequisites and basic notions
As a first year course, no particular prerequisites are required other than the so called minimum knowledge.

Bibliography
Didactic methods
Each frontal lesson is exemplified by specific classroom exercises. Support and in-depth material is available on the elearning site.
Recordings of all lessons are available on the Moodle pages of the A.Y. 21/22.
Learning assessment procedures
Theoretical skills are verified with a written test, possibly broken down during the course into intermediate tests.
Evaluation criteria
To pass the exam, the students must show that:
- they are able to design a digital device,
- they have understood the principles of a computer architecture,
- they have understood the principles of a computer network,
- they are able to apply the acquired knowledge to solve application scenarios described by means of exercises,, questions and projects.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
Mark of the written test or average of the marks of the partial tests.
