Students will know and understand:

- What globalization is: phenomena, subjects, powers of contemporary political transformations.
- What risk society is: the multifaceted dimensions of risk from the point of view of political theory.
- What global risk society is:
risk, vulnerability, security from the perspective of the socio-political transformations taking place in the globalized world;
Students will be able to:
- master contemporary political and institutional trasformations;
- apply the acquired theoretical-political knowledge to contemporary contexts of risk and vulnerability, in order to grasp their complexity but also to intervene in emergency situations with active re-organizational contributions.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Notions of contemporary political history, of the main concepts of political philosophy.

Program

The course will analyse the concepts of risk society and global risk society starting from Ulrick Beck's theories, comparing the theoretical approach with concrete cases relating to the risks produced by modernization and development (environmental catastrophes, climate crises, migrations, conflicts international, the risks associated with science and technology). The course will also investigate what relationship globalized risk society has with politics, understood both in terms of state governments and from a cosmopolitan perspective. In fact, outlining contemporaneity as a social and political dimension of society in which the lives and destinies of people are profoundly interconnected, we will examine the forms and ways of a new political dimension, post-state, where the overcoming of national borders is on the one hand an essential condition and on the other an opportunity to rethink society with a view to a new coexistence of solidarity. We will consider the evolution of the concept of risk society through a range of cast studies that help us to consider the dynamics of global social transformations. To this end we will move apply methods of risk analysis to assess the range of challenges we are facing in the world today.

Bibliography

Visualizza la bibliografia con Leganto, strumento che il Sistema Bibliotecario mette a disposizione per recuperare i testi in programma d'esame in modo semplice e innovativo.

Didactic methods

Lessons based on the interpretation and in-depth analysis of the texts in the program, on the discussion in class of concepts and phenomena relating to the exam program, on the analysis of specific 'case studies' with the help of audiovisual material. The teaching method is essentially based on the active participation of students, who are constantly prompted by questions to engage in discussion in class - with the teacher and with each other.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will focus on verifying the acquisition of the concepts, themes and specific cases covered in class through the final test, which will be written and will contain open questions and multiple choice questions.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The written exam will verify that the student has read the entire bibliography in the program and knows how to return it in a concise form with language skills, argumentative ability, demonstrating competence in the use of the specific terms of the discipline.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

50% verification of the contents discussed in class and contained in the bibliography 20% verification of the specific competence of the discipline (terms and concepts used in answering the written questions) 20% expository clarity, conciseness. 10% participation in class discussions. For non-attending students, the final grade will depend entirely on the evaluation of the analytical, argumentative and communication skills demonstrated in the written exam.
