Learning objectives

By the end of the course, the students will be able to - master the methodology enabling them to study the French language diachronically starting from historical documents such as dictionaries and encyclopaedias, accessible in various formats; - master knowledge on the history of publishing and press in French and its relationship with the history of the language, for instance: the evolution of official standard for spelling, the role of institutional dictionaries in establishing the standard, lexical innovations coming from press and journalism.

Good knowledge of French language.

Program

The course deals with the birth and evolution of the French language, in order to examine the main features of French in diachrony.
The program is DIVERSIFIED BETWEEN ATTENDING AND NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
a) STUDENTS WHO ATTEND THE COURSE
Attending students will refer to lesson notes, to teaching material uploaded on the Moodle platform and the bibliographical references given during the course.
The course is divided into two parts: Part I with a general focus and part II with a specific focus.
Part I offers an overview of the evolution of the language, with particular reference to the main periods of Old French, Middle French, Renaissance French and the Classical era. Representative texts will be read and commented on for each of these periods.
Part II aims to study 1) the birth of the scientific and technical language, in particular in dictionaries and encyclopedias, and 2) the French of journalism from its origins to the revolutionary era.
A particular focus will be devoted to the use of digital resources during the course for attending students.
b) STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ATTEND THE COURSE
NON-attending students will prepare in full the texts listed in the "Didactic methods" section below.

Didactic methods

The teaching methods include:
- Frontal lessons regarding the main theoretical notions.
- Reading and analysis of texts relating to different periods of the French language.
- Research activities and presentations during the class led by the teacher.
- Use of digital resources during the course.

Missed lectures can be made up via the materials published on Moodle after each lecture. The lecturer is available for any clarifications.

The exam is oral and takes place entirely in French.

Evaluation criteria

The evaluation will take into account the following aspects:
- the acquisition of theoretical notions;
- the analysis and comment of the texts;
- clarity.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The evaluation is expressed on /30.
Attending students are given the opportunity to prepare exposés during the course: the evaluation of such presentations contributes to the final grade.
