Learning objectives

In the context of the theoretic and critical investigation of French literary studies provided in the two-year master’s degree program, this course aims at developing both historical and methodological competences. The course aims at presenting an in-depth critical analysis of a given theme throughout French literature. Moreover, students will be provided with the theoretical and methodological tools for the literary and linguistic analysis of the texts taken into consideration. The lessons will be held in French, with the purpose of improving the students’ linguistic level as well. At the end of the course, students shall therefore acquire overall knowledge of the history of French literature, along with critical competences and the capacity of developing in-depth and comparative analysis of the texts the course deals with. Moreover, they will be expected to be able to present the topics of the course in French.

Program

FIRST PART
The course will focus on the dramatization of different aspects of the Oedipus myth through the centuries to show how different rewritings of the story of the Labdacides, which offers playwrights endless possibilities to develop what Aristotle called "the most tragic subject" (Aristotle, Poetics). The plays depicting the bloody clashes between the members of an "alliance" present various re-readings of an eternal and timeless tragic story that the very nature of the dramatic genre (text and spectacle) makes it possible to actualize : from the 18th century until the first half of the last century, the family and socio-political confrontations of the ancient city of Thebes mirrors the socio-political heartbreaks of the era of dramatic creation.
The course and the exam will be held entirely in French.
The detailed program, a choice of texts and bibliographical indications will be provided at the beginning and throughout the course.

SECOND PART

As a continuation of the previous module, the course proposes to present a 'specular' aspect in relation to the figure of Oedipus, namely the myth, even the 'complex', of Electra, according to the polysemous reception of 20th Century. Based on the most recent theorizations of mythopoetics, examples of the reinterpretation of the figure of Electra will be discussed (including significant pages of Electre ou La chute des masques by Marguerite Yourcenar), as well as its power of reverberation in a short novel from the second half of the century, Bonjour tristesse by Françoise Sagan, also allowing the articulation of different aspects of the 'myth' of modernity and cinema.

Students will have to read integrally:
Françoise Sagan, Bonjour tristesse, Paris, Pocket, dernière édition

The detailed course syllabus, a choice of texts and the critical bibliography will be uploaded to Moodle before the start of the course.

The course notes will constitute an integral part of the program and non-attending students are invited to contact the professor for the details and the necessary integrations into the program.
