Learning objectives

The course aims to illustrate the diachronic evolution of the Spanish language in order to understand its development processes (pre-Roman age, Latin age in Hispania, medieval Castilian and classical and modern Spanish), as well as to provide the main analysis tools of diachronic linguistics. On completion of this course, students: – will know the epistemological foundations of the discipline and major milestones in the history of the Spanish language, from its origins to the present day; – will know the main evolutionary phenomena of the Spanish language, at a phonetic-graphic, morphosyntactic and semantic-lexical level; - will know the main digital resources of Spanish historical linguistics; – will be able to carry out an analysis of texts in Spanish of different periods and discursive traditions.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Knowledge and skills related to the Spanish language and linguistics acquired in previous years of university study.

Program

The Historical evolution of the Spanish language:
— The history of the language: the epistemological foundations of the discipline and the tools for its study; periodisation proposals; the linguistic change; “inner” and “external” history of the language.
— The history of the Spanish as a research field.
— The Pre-Roman Hispania, the Latin in the Iberian Peninsula, and the birth of Castilian.
— The Germanic heritage and the Arabic language on the Iberian Peninsula.
— The consolidation of Castilian in the Middle Ages.
— The modern Spanish in Spain and Hispanic America.
— The Spanish language from the 18th to the 20th century.
During the course, texts of different types and historical periods will be analysed using the tools of diachronic linguistics (corpora, databases, dictionaries, etc.).

Didactic methods

Classes with a theoretical and practical approach.
N.B.: there is one syllabus for attending students (min. 75% attendance) and one for non-attending students.
Methods of teaching support:
Guidelines and teaching materials will be uploaded in the Moodle platform of the module. In addition, the lecturer is available during his office hours for support, which can also be arranged via ZOOM if necessary.
Finally, specific support and tutoring activities are available for inclusion and accessibility, with regard to the Language/Literature courses. More information will be available on the Department's webpage.

Learning assessment procedures

1) For those students who regularly attend the lectures, there will be an ongoing assessment and a final oral discussion in Spanish to be taken during the exam calls. Examination topics: theoretical and practical questions covered during the lectures; bibliography for attending students; teaching materials used during the lectures.
2) For non-attending students, the examination consists of a 90-minute written exam in Spanish to be taken during the exam calls. The test will consist of open questions and analysis of texts using the tools of diachronic linguistics. Examination topics: bibliography for non-attending students; teaching materials for non-attending students made available by the lecturer on the Moodle platform of the course.
All students, and in particular non-attending students, are invited to submit their doubts to the lecturer during office hours.
All published information also applies to Erasmus students, who are in any case invited to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course.

Evaluation criteria

Breadth of knowledge and skills acquired; clarity and precision of answers; quality of the expression of answers and accuracy of terminology.
Answers must be formulated in Spanish, with a level of language use appropriate to a master's degree program.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The grade will be expressed in thirtieths. For students who attend class regularly, the final mark will be obtained by calculating the average between the partial marks and the mark of the final exam.
The results will be communicated to those registered for the exam via the ESSE3 platform.
