Program
The goal of this course is the acquisition of skills which are necessary for conducting linguistic analysis and creating a presentation of the results using digital instruments. The course consists of two parts. In the first part (an 8-hours class which will take place during the afternoons of the 15th and the 22nd November 2023) two instruments will be introduced: (1) the database and search/visualization environment ANNIS, exemplified which a morphosyntactically annotated corpus of medieval German ("Referenzkorpus Mittelhochdeutsch", REM: https://annis.linguistics.rub.de/REM) and (2) the geographic information system REDE SprachGIS (https://www.regionalsprache.de/en/SprachGIS/Map.aspx). During the second part students will conduct an autonomous project (16 hours, supported by a tutor, to be completed by 9 February 2024) which consists in (1) the extraction of data related to linguistic features (free choice) from ReM or another similar database using ANNIS or another similar search and visualization environment and (2) the mapping of the geographical distribution of the data using REDE SprachGIS. The expected result of the project are maps which depict the geographic distribution of the features under investigation.
