Learning objectives
In the context of the theoretic and critical investigation of French literary studies provided in the two-year master’s degree program, this course aims at developing both historical and methodological competences. As for the students attending the course in French literature for publishing and journalism, this course offers insights on the history of French publishing and on the relationship between literature or literary criticism and jouralism. At the end of this course, students shall acquire knowledge in the field of the recent history of French literary criticism and related methods (LM37) and the history of publishing in France (LM19), along with the capacity of applying such knowledge to literary research as well as to teaching French.

The dance of words
The course proposes to analyze the dance of words at a polysemous level: from the representation of dance and movement in ballroom scenes, coupled with verbal 'evolutions' of psychological analysis, just as fundamental in the French novel since the 17th century, following a diachronic route we will go on to explore the dance of words in freedom before and around surrealism, automatic writing or even Oulipo, without neglecting an incursion into the 'figures' compelled or innovators of journalistic writing, in particular of aesthetic and literary criticism. The complete reading of La Princesse de Clèves, as the first paragon, and the vision of the eponymous film by Jean Delannoy will be associated with significant pages by Gautier Flaubert, Zola and the Goncourt brothers, to then arrive at some examples of the poetic creation of Mallarmé , Lautréamont, Breton, and their editorial context. Apart from Madame de Lafayette's volume, to be purchased in the edition indicated on Leganto, all other texts and the critical bibliography will be uploaded to Moodle, with relative details for attending and non-attending students. The course notes will form an integral part of the programme, and non-attending students are advised to consult the details on Moodle and to contact the professor for any necessary clarifications.
