Learning outcomes

Program

The teaching of Geography of Tourism will be divided into two parts: A and B.

- Part A:
Tourism has increased much in recent years, both from a numerical and economic point of view.
The course aims to provide the conceptual basis of Geography applied to tourism to understand the nature and evolution of the phenomenon. Such basis are also functional to capture the scope and impacts on local societies and economies. The fact that today an increasing number of tourists express multiple interests and require complex products to be created via the joint efforts of several actors (often belonging to different, albeit connected, supply chains), makes the themes of Destination management/building/governance relevant: the destination contributes, in fact, to amplify or diminish the quality of the tourist experience, depending on whether it is more or less well organised and managed].
Below, key topics to be discussed:
1. An introduction
- Tourism: an evolutionary perspective (a brief history of tourism, from its origins to today's special interest and experiential tourism)
- The evolution of the notion of tourism [the definition of: tourism, traveler, tourist and excursionist].
- Tourism, sustainability (economic, social and environmental) and development: key aspects
2. Tourism in the world, European and Italian context
- Trend to 2019
- Megatrends to 2030
3. Tourism, Territory and Tourist Destination(s)
- Territorial competition and tourism: an introduction
- The tourist destination: a conceptual framework
- The main factors that determine tourism
- The geographical delimitation of the destination (method aspects and open issues)
- The life cycle of a destination (focus: the birth of a destination)
- The concept of Territorial Tourist System
- Tourism spaces and organisational-territorial models
4. Tourism demand and supply-chain
5. Types of tourism (today)
6. Cultural (and recreational) tourism
7. Tourism policies [from destination management to destination building and destination governance: key aspects].

- Part B:
In order to go more in depth vis-à-vis point 6 (above indicated), this part will focus theoretically on the cultural tourist route as a tool to promote local economic development and the protection of the territory. The route involves various territorial actors and lends itself to the valorisation of cultural and natural heritage.
Below, key topics to be discussed:
1. The tourist (cultural) route: a theoretical framework
2. The illustration of (integral) routes at different scales - local, regional and international - and related policies (one of the most debated issues in Geography).
3. The phases in which a project for the creation of a (cultural) tourist route is articulated.

- Planned learning activities and teaching methods (for both modules):

• Frontal lectures
NB: we will use case studies and internet for demonstration purposes. In order to raise students’ awareness of the existing resources, we will make use of the material available in the University Libraries and in the website of the Association of the Italian Geographers (AGeI)
• Seminars on selected themes may be organized [experts - researchers and/or practitioners – may be invited to give seminars on specific topics]
