Program
Title: Identidad(es) y lugares: the emotional bond between person and place
This course is divided into two parts:
1) A first part consists of an introduction to the history, culture and literature of the Spanish Golden Age (and the reading of a work by Lope de Vega);
2) A second, more substantial part, concerns itself of contemporary literature. Starting from a key novel of the Spanish transition to democracy (“La città dei prodigi”, by Eduardo Mendoza) the course deals with the representation of the individual and his attachment to places: the city; the immigration in Catalonia (first from within Spain, in the middle of the 20th century; later on, from outside Europe). In this case, the historical, cultural and artistic evolution of Barcelona since the Modernism to the present, provides the ideal background for a critical approach to the proposed case studies: the individual and the city (Mendoza; Pérez Andújar) as well as the identity (both personal and social), between the local and the global (Mendoza, Pérez Andújar, Puntí). The emancipation of the individual, already present in Mendoza, is extended in the novels by Regàs and El Hachmi, including a youth and a woman’s perspective. Finally, each of the novels of choice (Carnero, Martínez Rubio, Miguel, Redondo) represents a first novel published in 2019, a way to learn about the current situation of the Spanish literary scenery with a particular attention to debut novelists.
