Learning outcomes

An introduction to the principles of the discipline; an outline of historical linguistics and textual criticism; an overview of medieval Romance literature with examples from the major genres (epic, lyric, novel).
Reading, translation and comment of quite a number of troubadour poems on a linguistic and philological basis.

Program

Romance philology and Romance Middle Ages; the origins of the Romance languages ​​and literatures with reading of the first documents and illustration of some fundamental and representative works; basic Romance linguistics; basic textual criticism.
Medieval Old Provençal literature; Old Provençal linguistics; lyric genres; metrics; reading, translation and comment of essential troubadours' poems, which are representative of currents and phases of the Troubadour lyric tradition.

Oral exam about the content of the course; reading, translation and comment of the texts illustraded in class.
