Learning objectives
Aim of the course is offering a knowledge of the history of literary Italian language, with specific attention to the language of prose, and improving the ability to independently analyze the texts of Italian tradition. Through the analysis of a literary genre, an author or a group of works relevant to the tradition of Italian literary prose, the course aims to highlight the implications of the language present in the texts with the other elements of the stylistic system (narrative structures, argumentative processes, discursive approach). At the end of the course students are expected to be able to operatively apply the acquired knowledge and, therefore, to independently proceed to the linguistic analysis of a text in Italian literary prose, as preliminary element for its overall interpretation.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge, at least in essential terms, the history of the Italian language and the history of Italian literature.
Program
La storia (1974) is the most discussed novel by Elsa Morante: the immediate and warm welcome from the readers was contrasted by the literary criticism that accused the novel of intellectualism and populism. In relation to textual construction, language and style La storia presents evident changes compared to the previous novels and short stories by Elsa Morante: the novel is composed of narrative sequences and historiographic sequences, the narration is built on a plurality of internal points of view that generate a polyphony of voices, the register of popular Italian, dialect and children's language are well represented. The course offers the complete reading of the novel La storia with analysis of language, style and narrative structures, also in relation to the other works of Elsa Morante.
