Learning objectives
The course aims to provide a methodological frame and practical tools for the teaching of Latin language and culture in high school; it also intends to increase the knowledge of Latin texts, with reference to their historical, literary and cultural contexts, as well as to strengthen the linguistic skills essential for an effective teaching of Latin language and culture. Prerequisites: advanced knowledge of Latin language and literature. Expected learning outcomes: at the end of the course students will - know methods and tools for teaching Latin language and culture; - understand and translate the Latin texts as indicated in the syllabus, with regard to their grammatical structures, literary forms, cultural contexts; - critically approach Latin texts in order to plan didactic activities and strategies.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Advanced knowledge and skills of Latin language and literature.

1. Reading of Seneca, De Beneficiis, book 1 and selected chapters from book 2, 3, 6:
Gift and gratitude in the historical-cultural context of the Neronian period. The Roman lexicon of gift and relationships. Senecan theory of gift and change. Communication and relationships: Senecan teaching and training exercises. Essential bibliography:

Didactic methods
The lectures will be accompanied by seminar activities, functional to the active involvement and development of the students' critical autonomy, aimed at opening spaces for discussion, comparison and experimentation of the didactic methodologies acquired.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam consists of an interview, which focuses on
-comprehension, translation and interpretation of the Latin texts in the program;
-linguistic, historical-literary and cultural knowledge relating to Latin texts;
-knowledge in the disciplinary teaching of Latin;
-didactic applications.
Evaluation criteria
The exam consists of an oral test aiming to assess the following skills:
-to read, understand, translate and analyze the Latin texts listed in the syllabus;
-to contextualize the texts in their historical, literary and cultural frame;
-to discuss the essays included among the recommended readings, with special reference to their didactic contents.
