Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will know the essential characteristics of the elderly (habits, fragilty, death theme, elasticity, plasticity and resilience), the ICF model, its implication on taking care of the elderly person, the distinctive traits of a institution and an institutionalized elderly (institutional neurosis).
He will learn to recognize the different types of dementia and the related BPSD (Behavioral and Psycological Symptoms of Dementia).
He will learn the characteristics of taking care of the person with dementia (relationship, language, orientation, etc.) and of his rehabilitation.
He will be able to recognize the main assessments that are given in the social and health care to the person with dementia and its caregiver / s: MMSE, Barthel Index, Mini Nutritional, NPI, GDS, Tinetti Scale, Comorbidity Index (CIRS), Caregiver Burden Inventory.
He will discriminate the concepts of "model", "method" and "technique" and will know the most known non-pharmacological interventions for the person with dementia: Vigorelli's capacitative approach, Validation Method, Reminiscence Therapy, Re-motivation Therapy, formal and informal ROT, Music Therapy, Aromatherapy, Doll Therapy.
He will learn the characteristics of the "Gentlecare" model and the environment impact in the life of an elder.

Who is the elder? (ageism, demographic analysis, ICF, patient-centered model, frail elderly, comorbid pathologies, resilience, the 3 phases of the elderly, anhedonia)
The theme of death: mourning and its elaboration, The Theory of mourning (Bowlby, 1982), the concept of Elasticity, Plasticity, Resilience, The suffering of the caring staff in geriatrics (Ploton, "The elderly person")
The institutionalized elderly (habits, disorientation, autonomy, sense of constraint, etc.), additional deterioration (man vs environment)
Aging in the elderly with psychiatric disorder

Examination Methods

The exam consists of two tests: a first written test (multiple choice) and a following oral exam; the exam will be done together with the one in the "Psychogeriatrics" course.
