Learning objectives

Among educational paths, the doctoral student’s is certainly not among the easiest. Not surprisingly literature reveals that one Ph.D. out of three manifests major depression and anxiety symptoms, one out of two intends to leave the academic career, and one out of 15 claims to have thought about suicide (Tommasi et al., 2022). Several factors influence the condition of a doctoral student among which is necessary to mention law salaries, the precariousness of the contracts that academia often offers, and the undecidedness of which career path to follow next (Nature, 2022; Science, 2022).

Program

Among these obstacles, experts have criticized institutions' failure to track and report how their doctoral and postdoctoral alumni fare in the labor market, both inside and outside Accademia (Science, 2017). A Ph.D. will inevitably guarantee an array of skills that are transferable across different sectors. These could be technical skills that are domain-specific and, more importantly, broad skills such as project management, data analysis, and effective communication. Whether the choice is to spend those skills in the research field with a postdoctoral fellowship, move outside Accademia with a position in the industry research field, join the government public administration, or become a freelance consultant, it is necessary to dispose of all the possible tools to structure one’s career in the desired direction (Science, 2022).
It is therefore clear that there is a need to ensure that PhDs are provided with all possible tools useful for their orientation in order to explore different possible outcomes both in Accademia and in the labor market (Science, 2018).
