The aim of the module is a critical analysis of the movements of claims of cultural identities in order to highlight elements of similarity and differences with respect to the struggles for recognition. Although the defensive movements of cultural identities can be traced back to the widest range of struggles for recognition, the different articulation between individual rights and collective rights is the hallmark of the two movements, which in view of promoting multicultural policies do not it can be underestimated and neglected In a multicultural society, the social worker in the organization, planning and provision of services must possess the knowledge necessary to review the theoretical frameworks of reference. The principle of universalism of services and protection of the social rights of citizenship must be complemented by a new perspective that takes into account the new dialectic between individual law and collective law, between the recognition of cultural identities and integration processes in a society that based on civil, political and social rights defined according to the Western Enlightenment tradition. The social worker must possess the theoretical and empirical tools to face the problem of the relationship between 'sovereignty, human rights and nation-state'. The assumption of the new paradigm of the 'egalitarian difference' is the reference horizon that allows the social worker to read the reality of users' needs and identify the most effective methods of intervention

As part of the workshop activities (12 hours), working groups will be set up to examine the critical issues that recognition theories pose: definition of 'common good'; individual rights versus collective rights; role of culture and cultural meaning; identity as belonging and identity as a process; differentiates egalitarian or equality of differences. Before the workshop activities, the teacher will make the work material available. In view of the teaching type, frequency workig groups is mandatory.

Program: The module is divided into two types of teaching: lectures and in-depth laboratories. In the context of the lectures (12 hours), the fundamental concepts, and related empirical repercussions, will be presented to introduce the new paradigm of the egalitarian difference. In particular, the following themes will be introduced: As part of the lectures (12 hours), the fundamental concepts and their empirical implications will be presented to introduce the new paradigm of egalitarian difference. In particular the following topics will be introduced: 1. multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity: the regulation of inter-ethnic and multicultural coexistence; 2. struggles for recognition: neo-communitarianism and liberalism; redistribution and recognition. Different political roads to manage the coexistence in the same territory of social groups differently characterized from the ethnic and cultural point of view.
