Program
The course’s topics are presented in the perspective of the “complexity paradigm”, which allows the connection of several elements related to a phenomenon, overcoming the cognitive reductionism in favor of systemic integration.
The topics discussed will be aimed at encouraging reflection, conscious use of theoretical frameworks, aptitude for deeper understanding of theoretical approaches, learning to "name" professional practices, promoting forms of self-education and self-assessment.
The main topics include:
1- The main theoretical models of social work: the characteristics and function of models for professional practice.
2 - Models, methods and techniques to work in complex situations.
3- The paradigm of complexity: social work’s objectives and interventions to promote support, social inclusion, and protection of rights, also referring to the assessment process of an intervention.
4- What it means to build social solutions in the perspective of complexity.
5- The complexity of working with different services and in multidisciplinary teams.
6- Good practices in social work: how to identify and apply them.
7- The reflexivity and constructive-narrative approaches.
8- Analysis of complex situations and intervention projects.

Learning assessment procedures
The exam is in oral form. During the examination, the candidate will present a written paper analyzing a complex case chosen among those presented during the classes or identified by the student. The analysis will have to highlight the theoretical and methodological references to the study of complex situations. The paper will have to be e-mailed at least 10 days before the exam date.
The oral examination will therefore concern both the paper and the theoretical aspects presented during the classes.
In the case of students not attending the classes, it is their duty to contact the professor for any inquiries about supplementary work.
Evaluation criteria
Students will be asked to demonstrate their ability to:
- know social work main theoretical models (both at national and international level) and their use to understand and intervene in complex situations.
- Show technical and methodological competence to relate subjective and individual aspects to macro-social dimensions of problematic situations.
- Explicit and apply theoretical concepts (including those from other disciplines) to professional practice, in order to guide professional assessments and interventions.
- Think and observe each individual situation, trough a reflexive and critical approach, and to implement theoretical knowledge through users’ and professionals’ knowledge-by-experience.
- Think critically, recognize and value "good practices", including social and ethical responsibilities.
- Consider different perspectives and multiple "narratives", giving meaning to different "voices" that coexist in the context of an intervention, e.g. from health and social services, public and private or third sector organizations.
- Manage interventions with high complexity in different problematic areas, with fully accountable professional judgments, engaged in interdisciplinary dialogue.
