French Medieval (Fantastic) Beasts:
Where to Find Them – not only in Bestiaries
The course will focus on a genre of the Medieval French literature, the bestiary. After some preliminary notes on the previous production, we will delve into the work of Philippe de Thaon, an Anglo-Norman author of the 12th Century.
In the first part of the course, we will read some excerpts from his Bestiaire paying particular attention to the manuscript context of this text.
In the second part of the course, some animals will guide us through other texts: in particular, we will follow the fortunes of the lion in Chrétien de Troyes’s Yvain and Richard de Fournival’s Bestiaire d’amour, two masterpieces of the courtly literature.
