Learning objectives
The teaching deals with the change, the contact and the variation of language and languages. It offers a key to approaches and understanding the human language in a diachronic perspective, fundamental to complete the skills of the student in linguistics, his preparation for further levels of study, and his abilities and training at the job's world, more and more characterized by meetings of languages and cultures in communication and rapid changes. Expected Results: - High knowledge of the facts and factors of language change and contact, and linguistic variation. - Recognize the aspects and phenomena of linguistic change and describe them in the correct way. - Critically consider the theories and methods of historical linguistics. - Present the results of the study adequately. - autonomously re-elaborate and re-use the skills acquired for further study and / or professional career.

Didactic methods
(1) Lectures dedicated to the topics of the course, encouraging the active participation of students with questions and discussions. (2) Articles to be studied during the lessons, selected from a list proposed by the teachers, based on individual interests, and to be summarized in a presentation to be hold in class or during the exam.
NB> Non-attending students. Non-attending students are encouraged to contact the teacher as soon as possible to organize a program as coherent as possible with the objectives set for attending students. The teacher is available to help non-attending students in understanding the material during preparation.
Learning assessment procedures
For all students (attending or non-attending) the exam consists of:
• presentation of an in-depth study on a theme agreed with the teacher;
• final interview on the entire teaching programme, including the presentations submitted by colleagues. Students will find lecture traces, selected bibliography for student readings and presentations on the e-learning platform.
Evaluation criteria
• check the state of knowledge acquired on the topics of the course;
• verify the ability to elaborate and deepen
The evaluation is based on knowledge, relevance and promptness of responses, the property of language.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
Composition of the mark: the final mark is given by the sum of the score of the oral exam and the evaluation of the presentation.
