Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this seminar students should be able to apply the methodology of Generative Grammar to the analysis of German sentence. They should also be able to recognize the importance of theoretical explanations for both : i) recognize the processes of normalization of linguistic structures and ii) appreciate the relevance of the comparative approach (Italian-German/German-English/English-own mother tongue).

Nach erfolgreichem Abschluss des Seminars sollten die Studierenden in der Lage sein, die erworbenen Kenntnisse im Rahmen des theoretischen Modells der Generativen Grammatik auf die Satzstrukturen der deutschen Sprache anzuwenden. Sie müssen zudem imstande sein, den Wert der theoretischen Erklärung zu erkennen für: i) die Normisierung von sprachlichen Strukturen; ii) den Vergleich verschiedener Sprachvarietäten (Italienisch-Deutsch/Deutsch-Englisch/Englisch-eigene Muttersprache)

Program

We will focus on the relationship between standard languages and dialects or minority languages from a theoretical viewpoint. The endangered minority of the Cimbrians and their language will be described in detail. Phenomena like the so-called residual Verb Second will be analyzed. Classes will be held in English and/or German

Examination Methods

The students attending the course will be given to opportunity to write a short essay on one of the topics of the course for both Part I and Part II. All other students will attend an oral exam
