Learning objectives

The course aims to make students understand the role of genetic testing in the clinical course of the patient. The course also aims to provide students who have no medical training the basic knowledge on the clinical aspects concerning the genetic basis of diseases. The course aims to provide an updated view of molecular biology techniques that are used in a clinical setting.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Knowledge of the basic concepts of molecular biology: Chemical structure of nucleic acids (DNA, RNA). The structure of the genome, chromatin and nucleosome. DNA replication. DNA mutation and repair. The transcription and processing of RNA. Translation. The regulatory ANNs. DNA extraction. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Didactic methods

Frontal lessons delivered in person. The material (PDF of the lessons) will be made available in the course Moodle before the course starts.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral exam in presence on all the topics of the program. In the event of new health emergencies, the exam will be delivered orally using the Zoom platform. The test potentially covers all topics in the program delivered to the student at the start of the course. The final evaluation is expressed in 30ths and the exam is passed with a score equal to or greater than 18/30.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Knowledge of the topics covered in class and the degree of in-depth study of the topics are assessed.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is awarded on the basis of the knowledge demonstrated during the oral interview.
