Acquisition of the basic legal knowledge and forensic background necessary for the practice of the profession of biotechnologist in the modern social context. Acquisition of basic knowledge of the modern technological approach in the forensic biomedical investigation.

FORENSIC MEDICINE - introduction to forensic medicine - general overview of health legislation relating to intellectual professions, health professions, professional secrecy, reporting to the Judicial Authority
FORENSIC TOXICOLOGY - introduction to forensic toxicology - biological matrices that can be used in forensic toxicology: analytical and interpretative aspects - different ways of preparing the biological sample in the pre-analytical phase - liquid and gas chromatographic separative analytical techniques: general and applicative aspects Electrophoretic techniques - analytical detection techniques: UV, UV-Vis, fluorimetry, mass spectrometry - validation of analytical methods
Drugs of abuse of forensic interest: pharmaco-toxicological characteristics and analytical issues
FORENSIC GENETICS - Introduction to Forensic Genetics - Biological sample collection, storage and characterization - Forensic biological samples: DNA extraction and Quantification - DNA Amplification: fundamental concepts of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and artifacts deriving from it - Genetic Markers used in Forensic Genetics - Forensic DNA Typing and Issues in interpreting genetic profiles - Forensic biostatistic parameters - Paternity and Relationship Testing - Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Laboratory - DNA in Court – DNA Evidence (GOAL 3 and GOAL 16)
