Learning objectives

The course aims to offer to the students a selection and an analysis of the essays published in the Western world during the 19th and the 20th century that were crucial in the construction of important critical methodologies.

Program

The course will offer a general overview of the studies of criticism and literary theory from the early 20th century. Starting from the primary texts in the program, the course will touch upon the authors and the major critical trends in the history of European literary criticism, showing how the relationship between literature and its readers is ever-changing and always alive. In addition to the primary and critical texts in the program, additional materials will be provided in class through Power Point presentations, which will be shared on Moodle.

Didactic methods

Most of the hours will be lectures. At the end of the module, a seminar part will take place: attending students will be divided into groups to do a small oral presentation of a critical reading of a text chosen by the group (the chosen text does not necessarily have to be one of the texts in the program). At the end of the course, the student acquires basic notions on the history of literary criticism (from the 20th century to contemporary criticism), and is able to analyze critical texts and develop autonomous reflections on theoretical and methodological issues.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral interview.
- Attending students who actively participated in the seminar: a question will be asked on the chosen manual and one on the critical texts; the grade of the oral exam will average with that of the presentation in class.
- Attending students who do not participate in the presentation of the texts in class: the interview will focus, in addition to the manual and the critical texts chosen from those indicated in the bibliography, on the primary texts analyzed in class and the critical readings provided during the course on the novels read.
- Non-attending students: the interview will focus on the manuals and critical texts chosen from those indicated in the bibliography, and on the primary texts. Non-attending students are invited to contact the teacher to agree on the critical bibliographic on the primary texts.

Evaluation criteria

The interview aims to evaluate the student's critical and argumentative skills, his / her language skills and mastery of the course contents. The object of the evaluation will also be the student's ability to know how to move within the sources and bibliographic material in order to be able to identify in them the useful information that allows him to illustrate the aspects and cultural areas of the discipline. The precise knowledge of the texts, the interpretative acumen, the critical sense and the argumentative effectiveness will be evaluated with the highest scores (27-30), while the descriptive and generic knowledge of the bibliography, with limited capacity for analysis and synthesis, it will lead to positive but not high ratings (24-26). Training gaps, superficial analysis and inappropriate or confused language will lead to poor or negative evaluations (18-23).
