Learning objectives

1. NUTRITION AND GROWTH:the course will allow the student to learn and go into detail on issues related to healthy nutrition. Pediatric nutrition and growth will be combine through a series of concepts / information that will range from correct growth and growth assessment methods to knowledge nutrition in the first years of life, different fed regimes and evaluation of the pros and contra of the various types of diet. A part of the Course will be dedicate to the various dietary regimes ranging from milk feeding, to weaning, and to nutrition in the first years of life. At the end of the course, the student will be able to set up a diet and to modulate it in relation to the different kind of patient.

Examination methods: written exam with multiple choice quiz questions.
The test will have a suitable duration in order to evaluate the preparation achieved by the student on the course topics.

2. NUTRITION AND DISEASES STATES IN CHILDHOOD: the course will allow the student to learn and deepen the issues relating to nutrition in various disease states in childhood. In particular, the themes of prevention and treatment of deficiency states, various forms of malabsorption (celiac disease, food allergies), acute and chronic enteropathies will be developed. We will also study behavioral models in food (obesity), endocrine (insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) and metabolic (congenital metabolic diseases) pathologies. A specific study will be devoted to feeding procedures for premature babies and refeeding (enteral nutrition) in complex situations such as anorexia nervosa and short bowel syndrome. At the end of the course, the student will be able to set up and re-evaluate a diet in the various situations of illness in pediatric age.

Prerequisites and basic notions

- Understand the principles of nutrition in pediatric age
- Know the nutritional needs for each age group and the strategies to address any disorders/problems related to nutrition in pediatric age
- Understand the role of nutritional education and the importance of correctly managing the organic and functional aspects that can influence nutrition
- Know current regulations and guidelines
