CHIM/01 - ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
Period
1° Semestre dal Oct 1, 2023 al Jan 31, 2024.
Courses Single
Not Authorized
Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of analytical chemistry, of the chemical-analytical process and of the most widely used analytical-instrumental methodologies and techniques. The skills to be transmitted also include the statistical processing of experimental data, and the resolution of an analytical problem on the basis of official methods of analysis and scientific literature.
Examination methods: Open written test.
To pass the exam, students must demonstrate that:
-they have acquired the fundamental notions of analytical chemistry;
-possess the tools to be able to critically evaluate both the experimental results obtained and those reported in the case studies also statistically and chemometrically;
-achieve a global vision of the analytical process, starting from the choice of the method to the elaboration of the results and of the types of analysis methods, clearly communicating their conclusions, as well as the knowledge and the rationale underlying them.
Prerequisites and basic notions
The understanding and critical use of the topics of the course of Analytical Chemistry applied to health products such as drugs, nutraceuticals and particular foods requires the following basic knowledge of mathematics, physics and general chemistry.
Program
-Introduction to analytical chemistry
Role of Analytical Chemistry, Calibrated glassware, Quantitative and qualitative classification of methods, errors evaluation in analytical chemistry.
Evaluation of analytical data quality. Figures of merit of an analysis method: sensitivity, selectivity, dynamic range, robustness. Characteristics of the results of an analysis: accuracy, precision, representativeness. Basics of statistics. Calibration methods; Sampling: pre-analytical variability; chemical-physical characteristics; analyte-matrix interaction; sampling of homogeneous and heterogeneous materials; number of samples sampling schemes; sampling error and analytical error; Sample pre-treatment: preliminary treatments for solid, liquid and gaseous samples.
-Classical analytical chemistry: Calculation of concentrations and chemical equilibrium in solution; Gravimetric methods

Bibliography
Didactic methods
Frontal teaching as the main teaching method will be adopted.
Lessons will be delivered exclusively in presence.
Learning assessment procedures
The objective of the exam is to verify the level of achievement of the educational objectives relating to the entire program.
The exam consists of a written test of 2 hours.
The assessment test consists of a questionnaire with open and multiple answers.
The student will have to demonstrate that he has understood and be able to use the fundamental concepts of each topic.
Evaluation criteria
The ability to speak and organize the required topic, the ability to critical reasoning, the quality of the presentation and the use of specialized vocabulary are evaluated.
