Learning objectives
The course aims to give the basic knowledge about the biological processes underlying social behaviour and political choices. In particular, the neural correlates of social interactions in political context, political orientation, in-group and out-group processes and their modulation by environment and culture will be discussed. The body/mind relation in the political and social behaviour will be analysed. The course will also illustrate the methodologies of research in social neurosciences and students will be conducted in the critical reading of the results of scientific research. The specific aims will be:
- knowledge of the biological correlates of social behaviour during social interactions;
- knowledge of the biological correlates of modulations in political behavior;
- knowledge of the research methods in cognitive neurosciences, with specific reference to political and social neurosciences;
- development of the ability to use instruments and techniques for the observation of social behaviour and implicit responses to social interactions;
- development of the ability to critically analyse experimental studies in neuropolitics.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No specific knowledge is required
Program
Introduction to political and social neuroscience A neuroanatomical look at the networks involved in social processes (limbic system, prefrontal cortices, insula, cortical medial network, salience network, central executive network, anterior cingulate cortex) - the perception of the human face and body in social choices Plasticity of neural networks The neurosciences of politics in social neurosciences (neuroeconomics, neuropsychoanalysis, neuroaesthetics, neuroethics) Social life between the self and the relationship with the other Social life (theory of mind, empathy) Prejudices and stereotypes Processes of ingroup and outgroup Leadership and political choices Embedding the world (theories of embodied knowledge and experiences of embedding)
