Learning objectives

The course aims to provide the students with a detailed knowledge of Latin literature in its main features, both with specific reference to its historical development, literary genres and rules, and by the knowledge of some selected works. Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Latin language. Learning outcomes: at the end of teaching students are able: - to show an advanced knowledge of Latin language (phonetics, morphology, syntax), prosody and textual criticism; - to improve autonomous skills in comprehension, translation and interpretation of the proposed texts; - to enhance autonomous skills for a philological, linguistic, and historical and literary analysis of the proposed texts; - to develop a metrical analysis of the proposed texts; - to enhance skills for an interpretation of the proposed texts with reference to their historical and literary background; - to present the teaching topics in an in-depth way, with a clear and well organised exposition; - to connect the teaching topics to the main framework of the history of Latin literature and to the specific features of literary genres; - to develop an autonomous reflection and analysis of Latin proposed texts; - to have an appropriate methodology for the study of literary Latin texts.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge of phonetics, morphology, syntax and metrics of the Latin language, as well as essential skills in understanding, translating and interpreting texts are required.

Program

A choice of passeges in Lucretius' De rerum natura.
MODULE 1 (24 hours, Renata Raccanelli):
-Latin didactic poetry and Lucretius' De rerum natura;
-reading and commentary on Lucretian passages, with special reference to the linguistic and stylistic peculiarities of the text;
-foundations of Latin metrics and exercises on hexameter.
MODULE 2 (12 hours, Evita Calabrese):
reading and commentary on Lucretian passages.

Lectures and exercises (metrics and translation methods).

Learning assessment procedures

The exam consists of an oral interview. The reading and translation, with historical-literary framework and linguistic, stylistic and metric analysis, of one or more passages taken from the Lucretian text will be required; some questions will also focus on the suggested bibliography.
N.B. Non-attending students are requested to contact the teacher in due advance so as to define a specific program.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The examination test ascertains the degree of
-knowledge of the essential characteristics of the didascalic genre, of Lucretius' language and poetic style;
-knowledge of the preparatory course for university Latin;
-autonomous ability to discuss the content of the suggested essays;
-autonomous ability to read, understand, translate and comment the Lucretian text.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is expressed out of thirty (min.18 to pass the exam) and is composed as follows: 60% ability to translate and comment on the Latin texts in the program 40% knowledge of secondary bibliography
