Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to introduce the fundamentals of phonetics, morphology and Latin syntax. The course is addressed both to beginner students and to those who intend to consolidate previous knowledge. At the end of the course, the student will have acquired basic knowledge related to phonetics, the morphology of the parts of the phrase (e.g. noun, verb, etc.), the essential lexicon and the basic syntax of the Latin language. Moreover, the student will be able to make a morphological and syntactic analysis of Latin sentences and to identify the logical function and the semantic value of their elements. Lastly, the student will be able to acquire the first bases for a correct method of comprehension and translation of Latin sentences and simple texts.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The prerequisites required are:
-good knowledge of the Italian language (oral and written),
-good knowledge of the fundamentals of morphology and syntax of the Italian language,
-good metalinguistic ability.

Program

The topics covered will be the following:
• the alphabet, accent and reading rules;
• the inflectional language: the 5 declensions of nouns and the 2 classes of adjectives;
• the finite and unfinished ways of the verb in active and passive diathesis: morphology, translation, values and uses;
• the main complements and the logical analysis;
• the basic vocabulary;
• the inflection of pronouns (personal, demonstrative, definite, indefinite, relative, interrogative, negative);
• deponent and semi-exponent verbs;
• the comparative and superlative degree of adjectives and adverbs;
• the method of analysis and translation;
• the syntax of the period:
- the ruling proposition: enunciative, interrogative, exclamative, exhortative;
- the coordinated proposition: copulative, aversive, correlative, declarative, conclusive, disjunctive;
- the implicit and explicit subordinate clause: completive (the infinitives), attributive (the relative), circumstantial (the temporal, causal, consecutive, final, the absolute ablative);
- the consecutio temporum;
- active and passive periphrastic.

Didactic methods

The course includes lessons and laboratory, with various exercises (also in groups). All materials will also be available in the e-learning mode and consolidation homework is provided, which will be corrected by the teacher, with ample space for questions and doubts. If it is not possible to correct all the assignments in class, students will be provided with a written correction of all the exercises, including the optional ones.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will be written, in the multiple choice test mode. The candidate will have to answer 30 questions each with 3 options in 60 minutes. There is no final grade but a suitability judgment, which is reached with 18 correct answers.
The contents of the test only concern the topics covered in class.
The examination procedures are the same for attending and non-attending students.

Evaluation criteria

The correctness of knowledge relating to phonetics, morphology, syntax and basic vocabulary is assessed.
The following skills are assessed:
- knowing how to analyze the elements of a sentence,
- knowing how to analyze the period,
- knowing how to translate the main verbal forms.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

There is no final grade, but the suitability judgment that is reached with 18 correct answers out of 30. The first ten questions evaluate the phonetic and morphological knowledge and the ability to recognize inflectional forms, cases and concordances. The second decade focuses on syntax and then tests the skills acquired relating to logical and period analysis and the recognition of different Latin constructs. Finally, the third group is dedicated to the analysis and translation of verbal forms.
