Learning objectives
The course aims to provide practical information on the writing of the thesis, from finding bibliographic sources to perfecting the paper in its final version. At the end of the course the student will be able to: - identify bibliographic sources consistent with the thesis topic, also through the use of opacs; - plan a paper consistent with the topic of the thesis and cohesive in relation to the individual parts (index, division into chapters, bibliography and sitography); - know the main systems of citation of sources; - insert notes, appendices, apparatus in relation to the hierarchy of contents present in the text.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Mastery of Italian language (written and spoken); good level of comprehension, analysis, and production of argumentative essays; basic skills in using word processors and browsing the web.
Program
Bibliographical research:
a. local, national, and international catalogues;
b. online tools: digital libraries, data banks, archives;
c. encyclopaedias, dictionaries, books, articles;
d. source evaluation and selection.
Quotation of the sources and redaction of a bibliography:
a. copyright, open access, Creative Commons licenses, images;
b. filing the material: summary of readings and quotation’s collection;
c. direct and indirect quotations;
d. style sheet and frequent abbreviations;
e. structure of the bibliography.
Writing an argumentative essay:
a. paraphrase and summary;
b. ideation, research, planning, writing, revision;
c. how to argue: thesis, arguments, evidence;
d. distinction between facts and opinions;
e. coherence, cohesion, connective words;
f. style and language.
Planning and writing a Bachelor’s thesis:
a. identifying a topic, assessing objectives, readers, angle;
b. timing, length, data saving, supervisor;
c. organizing ideas and creating an outline;
d. structure of the thesis: title, index, introduction, chapters, paragraphs, conclusion, bibliography;
e. consistency with the topic of the thesis and cohesion in relation to the single parts;
f. insertion of notes, appendices, apparatus;
g. revision of content and language.

Didactic methods
Frontal lessons with PowerPoint presentations; if possible, group works.
Learning assessment procedures
The final exam (1 hour) assesses the achievement of the course learning objectives and consists in a written test (open ended questions).
Evaluation criteria
To each question a score will be assigned on the basis of the following criteria: knowledge of the topic, analytical skill, critical thinking, clarity of expression and lexical accuracy.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The result of the exam will be expressed in terms of ‘passed / failed’, without a grade out of 30.
