Learning objectives

In accordance with the periodization adopted in our French literature courses (first year: from 1850 to the present; second year: Eighteenth century and first half of the Nineteenth century; third year: Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries), this course aims to present the French Literature of the 16th and the 17th Centuries and the artistic and philosophical culture of those historical periods. Moreover, the professor intends to provide students with the theoretical and methodological tools for the literary and linguistic analysis of the proposed texts. The lessons, both lectures and seminars, will be held in French, with the purpose of improving the students’ linguistic level as well. At the end of the course, students shall therefore acquire solid knowledge concerning the history of Sixteenth and Seventeeth-century French literature, along with the capacity of applying, in French, critical and textual analysis competences to the works presented during the course.

Prerequisites and basic notions

According to the prerequisite criteria, the student must have passed the exams of French Literature 1, French Literature 2, French Language 1 and French Language 2.

Program

"Je vay, je vien, je cours, et partout je tracasse" (I, 7): the restless Muses, Jodelle et Grévin
30 years since the death of Enea Balmas and 60 years since the publication of Enea Balmas' volume on Jodelle: Un poet of the French Renaissance: Etienne Jodelle, la sua vita il suo tempo, Florence, Olschki, 1962, the poet of Cleopatra captive and of Amours, recently published in the edition Gallimard /Poésie curated by Agnès Rees (2023), will be the subject of study in this course. The tragic poet of the Captive Cleopatra and the tormented poet of the Amours, the Counter-Amours and many other poetic constellations deserve, after the fundamental works of Enea Balmas (1962) and Emmanuel Buron (1997, 2013, 2016, 2022 UM), to be studied and deepened in the light of new research and insights. The mystery of his life, his network, his relationships with his patrons, his tragic and comic theater, his satirical sonnets, his complex and particular language, his failure will be examined in this course. The poet of the Pléaide constellation, Jacques Grévin, will also be studied and in particular the song writer L'Olimpe (1560-1561) and his theater (1561-62).
